I am Senior Lecturer in International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
At LSE, I currently serve as Programme Director of the MSc in International Political Economy and Convenor of the Summer School. I am an associate of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment and LSE Global Governance. I am also an Associate Fellow of the Energy, Environment and Development Programme at Chatham House and of the Global Governance Project at Amsterdam University.
My main teaching and research interests are in international political economy, with special emphasis on global environmental politics, multinational corporations, risk regulation and global governance. Details of my teaching can be found here. My current research projects are described here, and my recent publications, some of which can be downloaded on an 'open access' basis, are listed here. My most recent book, Business Power and Conflict in International Environmental Politics (Palgrave Macmillan), was first published in 2008 and re-issued in paperback in 2009.
I recently coordinated an international research project on the transatlantic dimensions of nanomaterials regulation, which resulted in the publication of a major international report on Securing the Promise of Nanotechnologies: Towards Transatlantic Regulatory Cooperation (2009). The report, as well as other publications from this project, are available here. My current research on the governance of emerging technologies focuses on nanotechnology policy in Asia and Europe.
My research has been supported by grants from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), European Commission, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Global Public Policy Network and the Rockefeller Foundation, among others.
From 2004 to 2008, I was associate editor of the European Journal of International Relations (EJIR) and now serve on the journal's editorial committee. I am also a member of the editorial board for the newly launched journal Global Policy.
Before joining LSE in 2002, I held lectureships at the universities of Munich, Oxford, Kent and Essex. I received an M.A. in Politics and Diplom-Volkswirt (M.Sc. Economics) from Munich University and gained a D.Phil. in International Relations from Oxford University (Nuffield College). In 2006-07, I was a visiting scholar at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies at Harvard University.
