Notebooks

General Guidelines

You will turn in two notebooks during the semester.

Each notebook must have entries for any 15 out of the 18 assigned readings. Each entry will be graded for its content and clarity. Artistic prose is not necessary, and is not recommended.

Notebook Entry Content

Each notebook entry should be about a page long, typed according to standard conventions (Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing, size 12, 1-inch margins, etc.). In order to receive full credit, a notebook entry must contain three components.
  1. A concise (1-2 sentence) statement of the author's thesis.
  2. A paragraph that clearly summarizes the author's argument for that thesis.
  3. A paragraph in which you give your reaction to this argument -- do you agree or disagree, and why?

Notebook entries should be written as soon as possible after reading, and it is recommended that you use them in discussion. However, you will only turn your notebook in on the date indicated in the course schedule, using Turnitin.com. See the submission instructions below for more details.

Submission

Your notebook must be submitted in electronic form through Turnitin.com, a plagiarism prevention web resource. To submit your paper, simply do the following:

  2. Click "New Users" in the upper right corner.
  3. Enter the appropriate Turnitin Class ID number and Enrollment Password (this will be provided in class)
  4. Finish the registration process.

  6. Click the "Submit" icon in the row marked "Notebook 1" or "Notebook 2."
  7. Upload your paper!

Acceptable formats for your paper are MS Word, WordPerfect, PostScript, PDF, HTML, RTF and plain text. Notebooks must be turned in before the due date, when the software turns off submissions.
