■ ■ In January 2009 Professor Westad lectured at the National Library in Singapore and participated at a conference at the University of Hong Kong on China and the Cold War. ■ In November 2008 Professor Westad gave a lecture at a conference in Rome marking the thirtieth anniversary of the murder of Aldo Moro and participated at a Cold War conference at the University of Sassari, Sardinia. ■ Professor Westad chaired the opening session at the fortieth anniversary conference for the Russian Academy of Science's Institute of General History in Moscow in November 2008. ■ The Cambridge History of the Cold War, a three volume series for which Professor Westad is editor (together with Professor Melvyn P. Leffler), is entering the copy-editing stage. ■ Professor Westad lectured at the University of California, Berkeley, in October 2008. ■ The Global Cold War will be published in Arabic in 2010. It has now been translated into nine languages. ■ In October 2008, Professor Westad participated in a conference at the Weatherhead Center at Harvard University on the 1970s as a focus point for global change. ■ Professor Westad spent most of July 2008 in Beijing, where he taught a Summer School in international affairs at Peking University (with Prof. Mick Cox) and did research for his new book on the history of Chinese foreign affairs. ■ In June, Professor Westad gave a paper at the 2008 International Summer Symposium at the Slavic Research Center at Hokkaido University on "Northeast Asia in the Cold War: New Evidence and Perspectives". ■ Professor Westad participated in a panel at the Organization of American Historians annual conference in New York in March 2008 on the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan: Historical Perspectives. He also took part in a conference at the German Historical Institute in Washington, DC on Modernization as a Global Project. In April Professor Westad lectured at Emory University on "The 1970s Transformation: Change and Continuity in the Cold Wars Vital Decade." ■ Professor Westad lectured at Princeton University in February 2008 and met with faculty and graduate students there. He then went on to UC Santa Barbara, where he spent two weeks lecturing and working on his new book in the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. ■ LSE IDEAS was launched in February. This is a new centre of international affairs and diplomacy, of which Professor Westad is co-director. It is housed in Columbia House, Aldwych, London.
