Restaurant Reviews - August 2020

To support the Eat Out to Help Out programme, we visited some local restaurants in August 2020. Most of them are located in Crouch End, London N8 and some are in central London. List ordered by visiting date and stars only stand for personal preference :P

Main Page

Melange Restaurant

  Modern French / Italian

  • Food & Environment:

  • Nice restaurant and worth to try. Smoked Salmon Tartare is a bit salty, Pollo Con Funghi might be a bit heavy if you are not a big fan of cream, but gratin dauphinois was quite a plus, Sea Bream with Roasted Almonds is nicely balanced.

Paccata Thai Kitchen

  Thai

  • Food & Environment:

  • Overall good quality. Thai Curries here are one of the best I've tasted in London, though added meats taste like cooked separated and added at the end. Papaya Salad is refreshing and nicely balanced, Tom Yum and Grilled Lamb Cutlet is standard, sauces in Phad Khee Mao might be a bit heavy.

Gloria

  Italian

  • Food & Environment:

  • Nice environment. You can see fresh flowers everywhere and there would also be a good place to spend your afternoon, with tea / light food and friends. Food quality are also good. We ordered their famous fresh truffle pizza and truffle pasta, and there is nothing to be disappointed.

The Clock N8

  Modern British

  • Food & Environment:

  • Standard modern British restaurant, overall good quality. Beetroot and Avocado Tartar is a nice fusion, Cornish Spider crab linguine is standard, Smoked Bell Peppers and Aubergine is quite creative and nicely balanced.

Jashan

  Indian

  • Food & Environment:

  • Conjecture about this restaurant: their curries are made by chef but starters are made by shopkeeper. The Malwani Prawn Curry and Paneer Tikka Lababdar are decent. Do not recommend Chicken 65.

Supplant Vegan Bistro and Bar

  Vegan

  • Food & Environment:

  • Extremely friendly restaurant. Great food as well. Can tell their passion of the Vegan lifestyle and enjoyments of sharing it. Mushroom Curry tastes good and flavourful as a vegan dish. Creamy Mushroom Burger (good fries! :P) and Mini Kebabs are very nice.

Sumak

  Turkish

  • Food & Environment:

  • To be honest I was a bit suprised by their Sea Bream Izgara, the fish was fresh and well grilled. Musakka was also flavourful. Like a standard Turkish restaurant, you will get your starter bread and salad before mains. Restaurant was a bit noisy but understandable.

Murger Han (Euston)

  Chinese - Xi'an

  • Food & Environment:

  • Xi'an food restaurant. You can find all the noodles that Xi'an is famous for there (but also limited to). We ordered Pork Murger, Steamed Rice Noodles, Lamb Murger Soup(recommend) and BiangBiang Noodle with Chilly Oil. It will be a nice place to spend your weekday lunch.

Midori

  Japanese & Korean

  • Food & Environment:

  • 5/6 as a restaurant and 4+/6 as a Japanese restaurant. Sashimi was fresh and other dishes are of good quality as expected. We ordered Osaka Set, Takoyaki, Unagi Don (a bit fishy smell) and Tempura Udon. Would recommend.

La Gioconda

  Italian

  • Food & Environment:

  • Average Italian Restaurant. Feels a bit overpriced without the Eat Out to Help Out programme, but they do have regular daily discounts. Braised Duck Leg and Gnocchi and Homemade Ravioli Scallops & Prawns were decent. Desserts taste like from supermarket :0

Paesan (Crouch End)

  Italian

  • Food & Environment:

  • Nice Environment and friendly staff. Would recommend Paesan Focaccia and one of their Antipasti as starters. Their pastas are good - might be a bit expensive comparing to usual Italian restaurants, but worth the experience.

Le Pot de Terre

  Modern European

  • Food & Environment:

  • Positively surprised by their starter quality. Honestly I didn't expect much first seeing their interior design, but the Flamed Mackerel was beyond expectation. For mains we ordered Creole Chicken and Mutton Curry, they were standard but still good.

Kampai

  Japanese Sushi Bar

  • Food & Environment:

  • Their menu is a bit limited, but still deserves a 5-star as a Japanese Sushi Bar. Fish were fresh and food were authentic - as how they describe themselves :P. There are not many dine in tables, but you can see delivery collections time by time. Would recommend as a sushi / light meal place.

Tomo Pizzeria-Restaurant

  Italian

  • Food & Environment:

  • Standard Italian restaurant. Prawns in Gamberoni are fresh, but its bread part is over moist. Pollo Crema e Funghi and Fitletti di Triglia are standard, though there might be possible improvements. Apparently they also have nice pizzas - should try next time :P
