Dr Catherine Hakim is a Senior Research Fellow in the Sociology Department. Her publications include over 100 papers published in journals and books and numerous books on the following topics: sociology of the labour market; women's employment and theories of women's position in society;  social engineering; work orientations and lifestyle preferences; occupational segregation; changing patterns of employment  and working time; self-employment and small firms; changing social attitudes; research design and research methods; social statistics and cross-national comparative research in all these fields..

Current research interests address four topics:

Preference theory and its application in research and social policy across Europe. Data from a variety of surveys across the world tends to support the preference theory perspective – as shown in the attached Table 3. Download PDF

Fertility patterns and (voluntary childlessness). The results of a study of childlessness across Europe are presented in the attached report. Childlessness in Europe

Women’s employment and the relative importance of lifestyle choices versus other factors in explaining the continuing and stable pay gap in Europe. Her book Key Issues in Women’s Work sets out the issues and evidence to date.
