In my research I am interested in finding out more about (a) how and when evolutionary theory can be used to illuminate issues that are not obviously evolutionary biological (especially ones in psychology, social science, and philosophy), and (b) how and when theories from psychology, social science, and philosophy can be used to illuminate evolutionary biological issues. To do this, I am trying to get closer to answering questions like the following:
- What can evolutionary theory tell us about the basic structure of our minds - e.g. can it help us find out about the function of our belief / desire psychology, whether Rational Choice Theory is an accurate description of the way we make decisions, how we attribute beliefs and desires to other people, and whether the Massive Modularity Thesis is true? - How does one test claims about what is adaptive and what is an adaptation - especially when it comes to cognitive traits? - Can evolutionary theory be used in a heuristic way in psychology? What does this mean, exactly?
You can see and hear me talk about some of my research here and here.
Other than doing philosophy, I enjoy spending time with my family, playing sports (especially running, taekwondo, skiing, and tennis), and listening & playing music (all sorts). |
