Bankside has a fantastic range of restaurants nearby, which have become increasingly popular with students following the raft of 2 for 1 offers which have prospered since the beginning of the credit crunch.

1. Chilango, Fleet Street

There's a reason Chilango are listed first - Chilango like Bankside! They've given us a personal 2 for 1 deal before and we're sure they will do more deals for us in future.

Type of food: Burritos

Typical cost: £5.40/£5.90 for a burrito, 85p for 330ml coke

2. Tortilla, Southwark Street

London food isn't just burritos, but this is another excellent burrito place, around the corner from Bankside.

Type of food: Burritos

Typical cost: £4.60/£5.60 for a burrito, £1.40 for bottomless soft drink

Deals: 40p bottomless soft drinks weekday lunchtimes; loyalty card available - buy 6 burritos get one free

3. Pizza Express, Riverside

Amazing views across the Thames to St Paul's Cathedral, but the same Pizza Express prices as anywhere else in the country!

Type of food: Pizzas

Typical cost: £8 for a pizza, £2 for soft drink

Deals: 2 for 1 deals frequently available, including 2 for 1 AND free starters on Wednesdays for Orange mobile customers.

4. Wagamama, Clink Street

Described as "pan-Asian" this is a noodle bar service great food in good sized portions. Their deserts are especially good too, if you still have room.

Type of food: "Pan-Asian", mainly noodles although Chicken Katsu Curry is most popular dish

Typical cost: £7-9 for a meal, green tea free, soft drinks £2

Deals: Join their website to access the promotions page. Have done restaurant-specific offers in the past, but not for a while. Ours is listed as "Borough/London Bridge" on the website, although the Fleet Street restaruant is also within easy walking distance.

5. Nando's, Clink Street

A popular Portuguese chicken restaurant chain. This one has an interesting interior thanks to its location under railway arches. Bear in mind the Nando's scale of spiciness is slightly understated - for Medium, read Hot etc!

Type of food: Chicken

Typical cost: £6+ for a chicken-based meal, £2 for bottomless soft drink

Deals: Almost never.

6. GBK, St Paul's

Gourmet Burger Kitchen. Decent burgers and nice shakes.

Type of food: Burgers

Typical cost: £7-8 for a burger, £2.75 for fries, £3 for large milkshake

Deals: Lots of deals - check MoneySavingExpert - often including 2 for 1's with the most expensive burger free. However, as fries are purchased separately, GBK 2 for 1s aren't as good as some others as it will only discount your burger.

7. Strada, St Paul's

Good-quality Italian food.

Type of food: Italian

Typical cost: £8 for a pizza, £8+ for other mains, £1.40p for bottomless soft drink

Deals: Beware - recent Strada 2 for 1 deals have excluded this and other central London branches (such as Great Queen Street, near LSE)
