Professor Westad normally teaches the following courses at LSE:

At undergraduate level:

HY235 Modernity and the State in East Asia: China, Japan and Korea since 1840

This course provides a survey of the history of the three countries since the mid-19th century, focusing on their struggles with modernity and the creation of new states.  Co-taught with Dr Antony Best; available 2009/10.

   

At graduate level:

HY463 The Origins of the Cold War

This course examines the rise of the Cold War during the period from the Russian Revolution up to the Cuban Missile Crisis. The course centers on how markets, ideas, and cultural interactions affected political discourse, diplomatic events, and strategic thinking in the early part of the Cold War. Available 2009/10.

 

 

 

 

HY464 Crises and Detente in the Cold War  

This course examines the period of crises and detente in the Cold War between the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979.  Topics for the seminar include the Sino-Soviet split, European detente, the Nixon/Kissinger era, and the collapse of detente in the 1970s. NB: Not available 2009/10.
