Asher Ghertner
Welcome to my research website. I joined the LSE in September 2010 after completing my PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. I am an interdisciplinary scholar, drawing insights from geography, anthropology, planning and aesthetic theory. My main academic interests are in the politics of displacement, rule and resistance, aesthetic politics, urban governance, and property. My ongoing research focuses on the spatial politics of land privatisation and slum demolitions in Delhi, which I use to critique normative theories of urban planning, government, and politics.
As a geographer, I strive to demonstrate how systems of power and privilege are inscribed into social landscapes. This leads me to attend to the economic and political means by which urban space is produced, as well as how that space acquires meaning to different social actors.
