Biography

I joined the Department of Government as Professor of Nationalism and Ethnicity in September 2004. Before that I was Professor of Modern History at the University of Birmingham (1995-2004) and prior to that I lectured in history at the University of Manchester (1972-1995). By first degree (University of York) was in History and Politics and my D.Phil (also York) was in History. I have held Visiting Professorships at the universities of Hamburg (1987-88) and Bielefeld (1992-3) and a Research Fellowship at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (2001-2).
