Andrés Rodríguez-Pose is an economic geographer. He studies why some places prosper while others stall, and what happens when people in stalled places stop believing in the future.
He holds the Princesa de Asturias Chair and is Professor of Economic Geography at the London School of Economics, where he directs the Cañada Blanch Centre. Between 2022 and 2024 he chaired the European Commission’s High-Level Group on the Future of Cohesion Policy. Its report sets out how Europe’s largest development policy should work after 2027.
His research on regional inequality, institutions, innovation and the geography of discontent is among the most cited in the social sciences. In the 2026 Stanford/Elsevier ranking he stood 441st across all scientific disciplines. He was first in urban and regional planning, as he has been in five of the last six editions. Clarivate has named him a Highly Cited Researcher every year since 2020.
He has advised the European Commission, the World Bank, the OECD, several United Nations agencies and many governments. In 2025 the Regional Studies Association gave him the Sir Peter Hall Award for lifetime contribution to the field.
